Who We Are
What is now known as the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Docent Council originated in 1973 when volunteers organized to share information about the history and architecture of the building which has been called the most beautiful courthouse in the country. We began an intensive training program for members in 1974, and the training practice continues today. In the late 1970s we added operation of the Courthouse information booth to our mission, and took interest in Courthouse restoration projects. In 1981, the County Board of Supervisors designated the Council official host for the building and included the privilege of “having representation in matters concerning the building” in their declaration. We formally incorporated in 1982 under the current title.
Our main tasks involve giving daily tours and staffing the Information Booth. In doing so, we educate and interact with thousands of people from all over the world. Members also enjoy social events, a newsletter, and an internal web portal.
We apply donations and sales revenue to Council-sponsored preservation and education projects. The lighting that showcases the Mudejar ceiling at the top of the main stairway is an example of a recent project. We also support projects initiated by our sister organization, the Courthouse Legacy Foundation.
We hold a training program once a year, and welcome new members who would enjoy sharing the wonders of this iconic building. If interested in applying, please see ”Becoming a Docent"
